Owl’s Prowl

Jane Song

Student Social Responsibility

Project goal:

Owl’s Prowl was created as Jane’s SVA MFA Designer as Author thesis. It is a non-profit organization that helps create transparency in the food industry. We expose particular food products and its animal-based ingredients and animals used in the industrial production through a website and free bimonthly newsletters. Beyond individual education, our organization promotes a more open and honest line of communication between the food industry and our consumers in hopes of preventing catastrophes such as the melamine-contaminated milk, the salmonella-infested peanut butter or accidental allergic reactions. We create informed consumer decisions and encourage the audience to share the knowledge with others.

Project result:

Owl’s Prowl meets the goal because it is currently on display online. There are six newsletters on the website that expose particular food and its animal-based ingredients; such as, cochineal insects in Nestle Smarties, Kopi Luwak coffee from Asian palm civets, certain beers cleaned through sturgeon’s swim bladders, lac insects on fruit, cow products in non-dairy creamers, and anchovies in worcestershire sauce. We share the truth by exposing food and animal connections. Everyone should be able to know where their food comes from and how it’s made. We are all entitled to make educated choices.
